What it takes to get on this page

Every product here is made in the United States. That means manufactured or handcrafted here, not simply assembled from finished imported parts. From there, each product falls into one of two groups:

  • Made in the USA from U.S.-sourced materials. The product is made here, and its principal materials or ingredients are grown or sourced here too.
  • Made in the USA from imported materials. The product is made here from materials we source from countries known for rigorous manufacturing standards, and never from China. Every imported material is backed by third-party certification or documented regulatory compliance.

Either way, every product listing tells you where each of its materials comes from. No "globally sourced," no vague terms. "Natural," "premium" and "vet-approved" are adjectives, not certifications, and adjectives don't count.

Made here, from U.S.-sourced materials

Dog rope toys. Our EarthCare® Bio-Rope® toys are handmade in the USA from 100% U.S. cotton. The line includes the 2-Knotter, 3-Knotter and 4-Knotter for tugging, the Bio-Ball and Tug & Toss for fetch, and the Spiral, Tug & Pull 2K, Tug & Pull 3K and Wishbone for dogs who want a little of everything. All of them carry the USDA Certified Biobased Product label under the USDA BioPreferred® program. That program verifies a product's biobased content through independent testing, so you're not relying on our word for it.

Cat toys. OurMomma Knows Best® Jacks and Sunspot cat kickers are handmade in the USA using 100% GOTS certified cotton fabric and are stuffed with GOTS certified wool and USDA Organic catnip grown in the USA.

Organic dog treats. Momma Knows Best® treats are baked or slow-cooked in the USA with USDA Certified Organic ingredients sourced here. Choose from Turkey Jerky, Chicken Jerky, Pumpkin and PB & Banana. The USDA Organic seal can only appear on a product certified by a USDA-accredited certifier. That's why we treat an "organic" claim without the seal with suspicion, and why you should too.

Dry dog shampoo. Our waterless shampoos, in Geranium Bouquet, Forest Fresh, and Unscented, are made in the USA with USDA Certified Organic ingredients sourced from the U.S. They're for the days a full bath isn't happening.

Organic catnip. Our organic catnip is USDA Certified Organic and grown in U.S. soil. That matters because a great deal of the catnip sold in this country is imported, and its origin is hard to verify.

Organic cat grass. Our organic cat grass starts with USDA Certified Organic seed grown in the USA, then blended and packaged in a USDA-inspected facility.

Made here, from materials sourced from countries known for rigorous manufacturing standards

Too often, a brand prints "Made in USA" on the package and stops there. There's no word on where the materials actually came from, even though disclosing a material's origin isn't hard. Other brands go a step further and reach for a catch-all buzzword: made with "globally sourced" ingredients or raw materials. It sounds worldly. The truth is, it too often means the materials came from China or elsewhere in Asia, and the label is doing the work of hiding that. So why go to such lengths to avoid saying so? Is it that they'd rather you not know? Or that they'd rather not know themselves? Perhaps both.

If you've never looked closely, learn what "Made in USA" actually means. Spoiler alert: it's not what you think, and what you find will surprise the heck out of you. Once you've read it, you'll want that kind of transparency from every product you buy for your furry children.

We do it totally differently.

When a material we need isn't available domestically at the quality we require, we look elsewhere, but never to China. We intentionally avoid sourcing anything that goes into our products from China, and we research the country's manufacturing practices and regulations first, then the specific manufacturer.

The reason is toxicity, and it's well documented. In 2021, New York State regulators found lead above the federal safety limit in a China-made toy during routine testing. Lead can damage organs and the nervous system, and it's especially dangerous for the young. Researchers have also raised alarms about harmful chemicals in plastic toys, and reports from Europe have warned of a flood of toxic Chinese toys reaching children. Pet toys aren't immune: a ConsumerAffairs investigation found some China-made pet toys contained what a forensic toxicologist called elevated levels of lead and other toxins. When the stakes are what our pets chew, lick, and sleep on, we'd rather not take the chance.

Every raw material we import is backed by a recognized third-party certification or by documented compliance with strict regulatory standards, covering harmful-substance limits, environmental impact, or both. Depending on the material, that means standards such as GOTS®, OEKO-TEX®, FSC®, USDA Organic, ISO, GMP and EU REACH, and for wool, cruelty-free certification confirming it is mulesing-free. These products are handcrafted in the USA from those materials, which makes "Made in USA" a qualified claim, and we'd rather say so plainly.

  • American Artisan® leather collars and leashes. Handcrafted in the USA from full-grain Spanish leather that is vegetable-tanned with plant-based extracts, without chromium or other metals, and with no formaldehyde, PCP or azo dyes. Every chemical used in the tanning process complies with the EU's REACH regulation, one of the world's strictest chemical-safety frameworks, which restricts substances known to cause cancer, reproductive harm and environmental damage. Collars: Rustic Blue, Rustic Red, Rustic Brown. Leashes: Rustic Blue, Rustic Red, Rustic Brown.
  • Whisker Woolies cat ball toys. Handmade in the USA from 100% Austrian wool, certified cruelty-free (mulesing-free). The undyed version is made with GOTS-certified wool. The dyed version is made with wool certified to both GOTS® and OEKO-TEX® standards and is colored with azo-free dyes.

Certifications, not adjectives

Third-party certification is the difference between a claim and a promise someone else checked. Our certifications page explains each certification we hold and what it verifies. If you want to see what's inside a product, our Product Anatomy page breaks down the components.

Here's what we recommend, whether you shop with us or not. Be specific when you search: "USDA certified organic catnip" gets you better results than "organic catnip." Look for the actual seal, not the word. And when a brand says "Made in USA," ask the follow-up question: made from what, and sourced from where?

Why we hold ourselves to this

Toe Beans® started with loss. After losing cats to cancer and chronic disease, we went looking for answers. We found an industry with no pet-product safety police, where "organic," "natural," and "Made in USA" were routinely used without proof.

We started Toe Beans® in 2018 as a family-owned company in Northern Virginia, and we built it on five core values. Four of them apply directly to this page:

  • Trust, earned through transparency, verified certifications and honest sourcing.
  • Health Without Compromise, because what touches your pet matters.
  • Education Before Marketing, which is why this page explains the standard before it asks for the sale.
  • Craftsmanship, meaning small-batch American manufacturing with standards we don't negotiate.
